Brain MRI

How Long Will it Take?

  • A normal MRI generally lasts from 30 - 60 minutes. Some detailed studies may take longer.

How Does the Procedure Work?

  • You will be asked to lie flat on a padded table, which slides under the ring-shaped magnet where the images are taken.
  • The MRI examination causes no pain. You should remain relaxed and still while the images are taken (up to a few minutes at a time). Some movement is allowed between images.
  • The radiologist and the technologist will leave the room, but are able to see and communicate with you over an intercom throughout the procedure.
  • If you would be more comfortable, a loved one may stay in the room with you during your examination.
  • Once the procedure begins, you will hear an occasional humming and thumping. These are normal sounds of the machine. If you find the noise bothersome, earplugs may be provided.
  • Depending on the study being conducted, a contrast agent may be injected by IV to allow for clearer visibility of tissues or blood vessels. Please see our article on Contrast Agents for more information.

After the Procedure

  • You will be asked to wait until the images are reviewed by the radiologist to determine if more images will be needed.
  • The radiologist will report the results to your physician.
  • There is no recovery time required following this procedure.
