Ultrasound
Real Time Pictures Through High Frequency Sound Waves
Ultrasound tests use only sound waves and no radiation to see inside the body and view internal organs. A small probe, called a transducer, is pressed against the body and sound waves are reflected off the internal organs. From the returning sound waves pictures are created that the radiologist will review. This test is painless and because there is no radiation this is a safe test for everyone including children and pregnant women.
Ultrasound is especially useful for:
- Evaluating organs in the abdomen and pelvis;
- Fetal/prenatal evaluation of a baby;
- Evaluating arteries and veins for blockages of blood clots; and
- Guiding biopsies of tumors.
How to Prepare for Ultrasound
For some procedures, you will be asked not to eat or drink for up to 12 hours before your test. For other tests, you will be asked to drink several glasses of water prior to your exam to ensure a full bladder.
Our staff will instruct you how to prepare for your specific ultrasound and answer all of your questions.
