Interventional Radiology:
Spine Compression Fractures
Vertebroplasty

This is a relatively new procedure used to treat fractures of the spine. These fractures, called compression fractures are most commonly caused by osteoporosis.

The procedure involves placing two needles through the skin and into the broken bone in order to inject biocompatible cement into the fracture. The cement hardens quickly upon injection and supports and stabilizes the fractured bone. Often used as a replacement to surgery, vertebroplasty is virtually painless, less invasive than surgery and has a shorter recovery period.

In 70 to 95% of patients there is significant decrease or complete relief of pain within several hours following the procedure. Almost all patients are discharged to home approximately two hours after the procedure is complete.
