Osteoporosis
A debilitating disease, both preventable and treatable
A disease in which a patient loses bone density, osteoporosis, can lead to hip, spine, and wrist fractures, though any bone can be affected.
Fractures often require surgery and can have other serious consequences, including loss of height, back pain, and deformity.
Standard x-rays are able to detect a 30-50% reduction in bone density. However, the radiologists at Radiology Consultants look for better results. We use bone mineral density testing called Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), which allows for much earlier detection and assessment of bone loss.
Osteoporosis affects about 50% of women and 12% of men 50 years or older. Early signs arent often obvious. Treatment is most effective when detected early. Read more at the National Osteoporosis Foundation
