Brief History of Radiology Consultants of Lynchburg, Inc. and Central Virginia Imaging, LLC

Radiology Consultants of Lynchburg, Inc. was established in the mid-1960’s by four radiologists – Dr. Powell Dillard, Dr. James Hunter, Dr. William Painter, and Dr. James Redmond. The practice was incorporated in 1977, and was located at 2007 Tate Springs Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24501 until February 2000. We’ve grown from the original four radiologists (who have now all retired) to the present complement of twelve.

The practice built and moved into a new imaging center location at 113 Nationwide Dr., Lynchburg, VA 24502 and began seeing patients there on February 14, 2000. Total space was increased from about 7,000 square feet in the old building to about 21,000 square feet on Nationwide Drive.

In addition to providing x-rays, fluoroscopy, bone density testing, and ultrasound, the new practice location added CT scanning and MRI studies through Central Virginia Imaging, a joint venture between Radiology Consultants and Centra Health, Inc. PET scanning services were added about two years ago.

Centra Health is the corporation that owns and operates the two hospitals in Lynchburg – Virginia Baptist Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital, which are covered by this group of radiologists. Radiology Consultants and Centra Health together own Central Virginia Imaging, located in the same building as Radiology Consultants and managed by same. Radiology Consultants currently employs 38 staff members and Central Virginia Imaging employs 7.

Lynchburg is a small to mid-sized city of about 80,000 nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. It boasts excellent recreational activities in its proximity to Smith Mountain Lake, Wintergreen ski resort, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The cost of living and the crime rate are both low and the schools are excellent.
